Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I join Liquid Assets?
— Aside from competing at the national and international level, we also pride ourselves in creating a supportive, family-like environment. After a season with us, you’ll feel like you’ve gained 40 new best friends. We also offer additional perks such as an annual cottage retreat and exclusive discounts from cool companies like Lululemon and Chinook Performance Paddles!

Do I need to be in Rotman Commerce?
— We are affiliated with the Rotman Commerce program, but welcome all students at the University of Toronto.

Do I need to know how to swim?
— Nope! We wear personal floatation devices while on the water. It is a water sport, however, so you may get a bit wet here and there!
Can I join without any paddling experience?
— Yes! Many of our members join with no experience and develop their paddling technique throughout the season.

When and how often are practices?
— During the recruitment and off-season, we host strength and conditioning practices 6 days a week. You are welcome to attend any session that fits your schedule, although we recommend at least 2-3x/week to see consistent improvement. During boat season, we train 3x/week, typically 2 during the week and 1 Saturday practice.

When and where do you compete?
— From May to August, we compete in local regattas and also at the national/world level. Some examples include the Pickering Dragon Boat Festival, Toronto Islands Dragon Boat Festival, and the Canadian Dragon Boat Championships. We’ve also competed at the 2018 Club Crew World Championships in Hungary, and qualified for 2020 in France.
How much does it cost to join?
— Our recruitment and training sessions are completely free to join! As students, we understand that sometimes finances can be tough. Once team selection is complete, our priority is to keep team fees reasonable and accessible for everyone. Depending on the season, team fees typically start around $300/year.

What do you look for during team selection?
— Our team is built on our 3 C’s (Character, Commitment, athletiCism), and these principles are what we look for in all of our members. Our fitness testing includes both strength and cardio portions, but we also value things like coachability, dedication, and willingness to improve.
